How to Add Japandi Style to Your Home

Oct 12, 2023

Combining design influences from Japan and Scandinavia to create a unified style has been one of my dreams, encompassing the elements I love most. This fusion is known as 'Japandi,' and it's a natural pairing, given that both aesthetics share common principles. They both champion minimalism, prioritize functionality, and incorporate natural influences.

The beauty of the Japandi style is that it can be seamlessly incorporated into your home with just a few steps. Expert designers provide effective ways to introduce Japandi elements into your living space.

Creating the Japandi Look in any space can be achieved through a few straightforward steps. It begins with a clean slate by decluttering and retaining only items with a clear purpose for the room. In the realm of Japandi, minimalism is crucial, allowing for a harmonious and unobstructed flow within the space.

Japandi is more than a passing trend; it's a lifestyle. In our busy lives, we've come to appreciate the value of tranquility and serenity. People are in search of simplicity and yearning to establish sanctuary-like environments. By eliminating clutter, you provide room for the simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship of each piece to shine. However, this isn't to be mistaken for a strict minimalist approach; it's about intention rather than creating a sense of emptiness. Each piece earns its place and contributes something meaningful to the space.

Be Open

Creating the Japandi style is best achieved in large, open spaces that allow natural light to permeate. Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism truly shines in expansive, open-plan areas, allowing key pieces to take center stage and fostering a sense of roominess and tranquility. One effective method to attain this look without removing walls is to incorporate low furniture.

Consider using low benches, armchairs, beds, and coffee tables, and feel free to combine different types of furniture to introduce texture and contrast. Low furniture contributes to a visually open, captivating, and authentic atmosphere. However, it's essential to strike a balance. To achieve a minimalist look and maintain free flow throughout your space, you should ensure it remains obstacle-free.

Quality Over Quantity

In a Japandi-themed home, the principle of 'less is more' holds great significance. When it comes to choosing accessories and furniture, Lita recommends a selective approach, emphasizing items that are both thoughtful and functional. This style prioritizes multi-functional furniture in the home, with a focus on practicality and simplicity. Each piece should be regarded as a long-term investment, and there's no rush in making selections. Create a list of essential pieces and take your time finding those that truly resonate with you.

Opt for clean lines when selecting furniture and accessories. Whether it's curvilinear, rectilinear, or features dramatic lines, the shapes of specific pieces of furniture and artwork are chosen with a clear purpose, meant to be admired and celebrated.

Neutral Colour Palette

Experts advise adhering to a warm and neutral color palette when embracing the Japandi aesthetic. Think of hues like beiges, creams, oatmeals, tans, and stone colors. The fusion of traditional Scandinavian neutrals with darker Japanese-style timbers and raw materials as a natural combination that fosters a sense of serenity and unity.

A neutral palette need not be dull; the key to making it stand out is through contrast, particularly by incorporating the depth of colour reminiscent of Japanese traditional style. You should consider indigo blues, dark greys, and deep earthy tones to complement your Scandinavian neutrals. However, it's essential not to go overboard with these darker colors. They recommend using them sparingly and deliberately throughout your home.
