Don't break out the pool furniture just yet. Prepare your home for the summer by checking off basic home maintenance issues accumulated during the winter. By staying on top of these issues with DIY quick fixes and maintenance tips, you can welcome summer comfortably:

Patch Holes in Your Drywall

Almost anyone can patch a small hole in drywall. It will make the space look good as new. Use a spackle knife to fill the holes with putty. Be sure to scrape the excess off as you work. Wait for the stuff to dry and sand down the spot until it is smooth. Paint over the repaired area with a primer, and it will be as if there was no hole there at all.

If you have larger holes, consider hiring a professional for the patch, which will be more complex. They can ensure that all seams are invisible once they are painted over.

Pressure Wash Outdoor Areas

When the snow melts outside, it will leave behind mud, grime, and debris that will make your home's exterior look grungy. Benefit from the warm weather by giving it a good power wash. A pressure washer can easily remove build-up on the siding, patio, driveway, and walkway, and you don't need any elbow grease.

You can rent a pressure washer if you don't want to splurge on one. Spray downward rather than straight on so there is no backsplash. Use a low-pressure setting on surfaces that can break under pressure, such as a wooden deck.

Refinish the Deck

Your deck may be worse for wear after the melt. Breathe new life into it with a fresh coat of paint or stain. It will make your deck look good as new and reduce splinters which may otherwise prick bare feet. Prep the surface properly to finish it beautifully and strip off the old finish first.

During this time, consider painting your patio furniture and hanging some string lights to make the space look and feel like an oasis. The revamped deck will make a great impression if you plan on barbecuing with some friends.

Repaint the Window Trims and Doors

Besides your deck, your doors and windows may also have taken a beating during the winter. Paint them anew to repair chipped paint and damage. It will also give your home a much-needed facelift. Also, consider re-staining wood trim and fences.

Clear Debris from Your Air Conditioning Unit

Maintain a clean and clear AC unit by giving it a cleaning after the winter. Remove large trash pieces by hand and use your vacuum's soft brush attachment on the fins to spray off loose particles. A well-maintained AC will cool your home quickly and simultaneously reduce your energy bill. It will also last for years.

Clean Out Your Washing Machine

If your washing machine gives off a mildewy smell, clean it before it gets hot outside. You can also hire a professional to do this for you for a fee. The last thing you need is stinky clothes when you need fresh, sweat-free daily clothing. Do this once a month.

Fix the Driveway

Your driveway provides the first impression of your home. It’s the first thing anyone sees since it takes up a lot of space around your home. But that space can quickly become an eyesore if it isn’t maintained before summer.

So if your driveway has cracks or is discoloured, re-pave it or remodel it completely to give your home's exterior a new look. Add more landscaping to integrate it into your outdoor space, add more gravel if needed, or replace missing pavers.

Inspect and Repair the Roof

While you check out the gutter around the roof line, inspect the roof properly. Look for missing or damaged shingles and black residue that may indicate a failing roof. Hire professionals to do extensive repairs if needed. A new roof will cost you a hefty amount of money.

Make Your Home Summer-Ready in No Time

While we want nothing more than to invite our friends to a party as soon as summer starts, a dilapidated house will make a bad impression. Use the DIY quick fixes and maintenance tips mentioned in our guide to make your house look and feel good as new after winter. Make your summer great again!
